practitioners offering wax removal. But not all providers are equally qualified — and when it comes to your hearing, the difference in training can make all the difference to your safety and results.

At Wigan Hearing, every procedure is carried out by a fully qualified BSc (Hons) Audiologist, not someone who’s completed a brief or one-day course.

What a BSc (Hons) in Audiology Means

A Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Audiology is a three-year university qualification that covers:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the ear

  • Advanced diagnostic testing, including audiometry, tympanometry, OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions), and acoustic reflexes

  • Pathology and disease recognition

  • Hearing aid technology and fitting

  • Patient care, ethics, and clinical governance

  • HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) standards and clinical placement experience

This level of training ensures that an audiologist understands not just how to remove wax, but why it formed, whether removal is appropriate, and what underlying conditions could be present.

What a One-Day Ear Wax Removal Course Covers

Many healthcare workers — including nurses and pharmacists — can attend a one-day private ear wax removal course. These typically teach:

  • Basic use of ear irrigation or microsuction equipment

  • Simple ear anatomy

  • Practical wax removal demonstrations

While these short courses can introduce safe technique, they don’t cover diagnostic audiology, middle-ear function, or pathological ear conditions. That means if something doesn’t look right, or if your hearing loss isn’t due to wax, they may not have the expertise or equipment to identify it.

Why Choose Wigan Hearing

At Wigan Hearing, we go far beyond standard wax removal. Every appointment includes free tympanometry, a visual ear health check, and professional advice from a registered audiologist.

We can also provide:

  • Full hearing assessments (including speech audiometry)

  • Tympanometry and OAE testing

  • Hearing aid fittings and adjustments

  • Tinnitus advice and management

  • Aftercare and follow-up tailored to your needs

And unlike many mobile or part-time wax clinics, we’re a full-time audiology clinic based right here in Standish, serving Wigan, Shevington, Appley Bridge, and surrounding areas.

Our Commitment to Training and Safety

At Wigan Hearing, we believe that ongoing professional development is key to maintaining the highest standards. Our audiologist, Darren Glancey BSc (Hons), FdSc, HCPC Registered, BSHAA  Fellow, AIHHP, continues to undertake regular training, peer review, and accreditation updates to ensure our clinic remains one of the most trusted in the region.
