Could Ear Wax Be Causing Your Symptoms?
A build-up of ear wax can cause reduced hearing and other ear symptoms. We will examine your ears to check whether wax may be contributing to the problem.
- Blocked or muffled hearing
- A feeling of pressure or fullness
- Earache or discomfort
- Ringing or buzzing
- Vertigo — feeling dizzy or sick
- Hearing aids sounding quieter or whistling
These symptoms can have causes other than wax. If we do not find wax, we’ll explain what we can see and advise you on the appropriate next step.
What Happens During Your Appointment?
1. We examine your ears
We’ll ask about your symptoms and relevant ear or medical history, then examine both ears using video otoscopy.
2. We explain your options
If wax is present, we’ll explain which removal method is most suitable. This may be microsuction, irrigation, manual removal or a combination of methods.
3. We remove the wax
Treatment is carried out while your ear canal is viewed directly. We will explain what is happening throughout and can pause at any time. Microsuction may sound loud inside the ear.
4. We check your ears again
Once treatment is complete, we’ll examine your ears again and show you the result on screen. We’ll also provide any relevant aftercare advice.

Why Ear Wax Removal Should Be Performed by a Qualified Audiologist
Ear wax removal should only be carried out by appropriately trained professionals. As HCPC-registered audiologists, we are trained to assess ear health, identify conditions where wax removal is not appropriate, and adapt treatment safely. This level of clinical judgement is essential to avoid injury to the ear canal or eardrum.
How We Remove Ear Wax Safely
We select the most appropriate removal method after examining your ears. Depending on your ear health and medical history, this may be microsuction, irrigation or manual removal. We will explain the options before treatment begins.
Treatment can usually be completed during the appointment, although this depends on the amount and type of wax present. Sometimes we may use a combination of methods or recommend a further visit. We will explain what is happening throughout the appointment.
Your appointment is carried out by an HCPC-registered Hearing Aid Dispenser with additional training and experience in microsuction, irrigation and manual ear wax removal. Wigan Hearing is fully insured, and Darren is a Fellow of BSHAA and a member of AIHHP.

Ear Wax Removal FAQs
Is ear wax removal painful?
Most patients find the procedure comfortable. You may hear suction noise or feel some movement inside the ear, but we’ll explain what is happening and can pause at any point.
Which ear wax removal method do you use?
We offer microsuction, irrigation and manual removal. The method used depends on the type and position of the wax, your ear health and your medical history.
Do I need to use olive oil before ear wax removal?
Follow the preparation instructions provided when you book. Softening hard wax beforehand can make removal easier, but drops may not be appropriate for everyone.
Can you remove wax from both ears in one appointment?
Yes. We can examine and, where appropriate, treat both ears during the same appointment.
How long does an ear wax removal appointment take?
Please allow approximately 30 minutes, although treatment itself may be quicker.
Do you offer ear wax removal for children?
Yes. We provide appointments for children aged five and over as well as adults.
What happens if the ear wax cannot be removed?
We will not force wax out if it cannot be removed safely. We may advise further softening and arrange a follow-up appointment.
Can you check my hearing after ear wax removal?
Yes. If your hearing remains reduced after the wax has been removed, we can arrange a separate hearing assessment at our Standish clinic.
