About Wigan Hearing

Founded in 2018 by audiologist Darren Glancey, Wigan Hearing is an independent, family-run audiology clinic based in Standish.

We provide comprehensive hearing tests, independent hearing-aid advice, professional ear wax removal and specialist ear-care services. Every clinical appointment is carried out by an HCPC-registered audiologist.

Our aim is simple: to provide thorough assessments, clear explanations and ongoing support from a familiar local team—without pressure or a hard sell.

A Local Clinic Run by Local People

I’m Darren Glancey, the founder and lead audiologist at Wigan Hearing.

I opened the clinic because I wanted to provide the kind of hearing care I would expect for my own family: thorough appointments, straightforward explanations and recommendations based on what someone genuinely needs.

Michelle and I run the business together, and we live locally in Standish. That local connection matters to us. Patients are not dealing with a distant head office or being passed between different branches—they are dealing directly with the people responsible for their care.

We want the clinic to feel professional without feeling intimidating. Many people arrive worried about their hearing or unsure what to expect, so we take things at a comfortable pace and explain each stage as we go.

My Background in Audiology

Before opening Wigan Hearing, I worked in technical and professional-support roles with major hearing-aid manufacturers, including Phonak and Unitron.

That experience gave me a detailed understanding of hearing-aid technology, programming and troubleshooting. It also showed me that even the best hearing aid will only perform properly when it has been carefully selected, fitted and adjusted for the individual person.

I hold an FdSc in Hearing Aid Audiology and a BSc (Hons) in Audiology. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, a Fellow of BSHAA and a member of AIHHP.

I continue to keep up to date with developments in hearing technology, clinical testing and patient care so that the advice we give remains practical, current and evidence-based.

About Wigan Hearing

What Being Independent Means for You

Wigan Hearing is not owned by a hearing-aid manufacturer, and we are not restricted to one brand or product range.

That means we can compare technology from all major manufacturers and recommend what best suits your hearing, lifestyle, dexterity, phone use, personal preferences and budget.

Sometimes the right recommendation is a hearing aid. Sometimes it is ear wax removal, further testing or simply reassurance and advice. We will explain the options honestly and give you time to make your own decision.

There is no pressure to buy during your appointment.

What to Expect When You Visit

We begin by listening to what you have noticed and how it is affecting everyday life.

Depending on the reason for your appointment, we may examine your ears using video otoscopy and carry out tests including air and bone-conduction audiometry, speech testing, tympanometry, acoustic reflex measurements or otoacoustic emissions.

We explain the results in plain language and show you what they mean. You will leave knowing what we found, whether any action is recommended and what the next step would involve.

When hearing aids are fitted, we use real-ear measurements to confirm that they are providing the appropriate amplification for your individual hearing loss. Our hearing aids also include ongoing aftercare and a five-year warranty.

Our Services

Comprehensive Hearing Tests

Our hearing assessments look at more than whether you can hear a series of beeps. We examine your ears, assess the different parts of your hearing system and explain how the results relate to conversations and everyday listening.

Independent Hearing-Aid Advice

We supply hearing aids from all major manufacturers, from discreet everyday devices to advanced rechargeable technology. Recommendations are based on your requirements rather than a limited brand range.

Professional Ear Wax Removal

We provide microsuction, irrigation and manual ear wax removal. The method used depends on your ear health and the type and position of the wax.

Specialist Ear and Hearing Services

We also provide tinnitus assessments and support, speech audiometry, middle-ear testing, 3D ear scanning, custom hearing protection, swim plugs and specialist ear products.

What Matters to Us

Good hearing care is not only about equipment or test results. It is also about being listened to, understanding what is happening and knowing that support will continue after the appointment.

We want every patient to feel comfortable asking questions. We will not make something sound more complicated than it is, and we will never recommend treatment or technology simply for the sake of making a sale.

Our aim is for you to leave the clinic feeling informed, reassured and confident about whatever you decide to do next.
