Which Ear Wax Removal Method Is Right for You?
At Wigan Hearing, we believe in giving you clear, honest advice. If you’re looking for the best ear wax removal method in Wigan, understanding your options is a great place to start. Let’s walk through the different methods and help you make an informed decision about your hearing health.
1. Ear Irrigation
Ear irrigation involves gently flushing the ear canal with warm water. A trained clinician typically performs this procedure using a special irrigation device. While it’s a common method, it may not suit everyone—especially those with a history of ear infections or eardrum issues.
2. Ear Drops
Over-the-counter ear drops can soften wax, making it easier to remove naturally or with irrigation. They’re usually applied for a few days. Although drops can ease discomfort, they don’t always fully clear the blockage and often require follow-up treatment.
3. Manual Removal
Manual removal uses specialist tools such as curettes or fine suction. This method offers precision and control, making it ideal when other treatments haven’t worked or when wax is impacted.
4. Microsuction – Our Preferred Method
Microsuction is widely regarded as the safest and most effective ear wax removal technique. We use a gentle vacuum and magnified visuals to remove wax cleanly and safely. There’s no water involved, which makes it ideal for people with sensitive ears or previous ear issues. You’ll likely experience immediate relief.
5. Endoscopic Removal
Endoscopic removal uses a small camera (endoscope) to guide the process. This approach is excellent for patients with narrow or curved ear canals. It also allows the audiologist to see the wax in detail and remove it more effectively.
6. Hopi Ear Candles: Why We Don’t Recommend Them
Despite their popularity in alternative circles, Hopi ear candles are not safe or effective. Clinical organisations like NICE advise against their use due to the high risk of burns, ear canal damage, and infection. The leftover debris often seen after use is from the candle itself—not ear wax.
